Promoting British Values

The Department for Education states that all schools have a duty to ‘actively promote’ the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values were first set out by the government in the ‘Prevent’ strategy in 2011. 

At Diss, these values are reinforced regularly in the following ways:

Democracy:

Children are given active roles in democratic processes, including the voting in of school councilors. Children at Diss are listened to through various pupil voice questionnaires and senior leaders have an active role in pupil led discussions. Pupils are involved in the hiring of new staff and their opinion is held in high regard.

The Rule of Law:

The importance of Laws, whether they are in the classroom, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies. Children are taught right and wrong through our extensive PATHS and PSHE curriculums. We have strong connections with the local police force and local church. 

Individual Liberty:

Children are consistently supported and encouraged to make their own choices in a safe, comforting environment. We celebrate success regularly through whole school celebration assemblies. School values are communicated through all members of staff.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance:

Our school vision and values are focused on respecting others regardless of beliefs. This is fundamental at Diss. Children are taught to show tolerance through PATHS, RE and PSHE. We promote and celebrate our individual differences as well as celebrating a variety of different festivals and occasions. 

British Values at Diss are fundamental in following our school vision and values. We believe all children will become well-rounded, respected members of society by following these values.
