Computing

 

Technology is all around us and an essential part of everyday life. At Diss Primary Academy Partnership, we aim to equip our children with the knowledge and skills to become confident, safe users of technology and use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. 


Computer Science is the core of computing where children are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. From here pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programmes, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that our children are digitally literate; able to use, express themselves and develop ideas through IT as participants in the digital world and in the future workplace.


Online safety features across our curriculum. Children learn how to use technology safely, keep their personal information private and treat other people with respect. If something goes wrong or they see something they don’t like, they know what to do and where to go for help. As children get older, they learn about how to use technology responsibly, how their online behaviour affects others, their legal and ethical responsibilities, and keeping personal data secure.


As a school we follow the ‘Teach Computing Curriculum’. These lessons are based on a spiral curriculum. This means that each of the themes is revisited, and pupils revisit each theme through a new unit that consolidates and builds on prior learning within that theme. Each lesson is sequenced so that it builds on the learning from the previous lesson, and where appropriate, activities are scaffolded so that all pupils can succeed and thrive. Exploratory tasks are given to foster a deeper understanding of a concept, encouraging pupils to apply their learning in different contexts and make connections with other learning experiences. The lessons are tailored and suitable for all pupils irrespective of their skills, background, and additional needs.
