What We Do
At Diss Junior Academy, we understand that every child is unique and some children may find it challenging to regulate their emotions in a mainstream classroom setting. To support these children, we offer an alternative learning environment in our Cherry Class, a nurturing space specifically designed for children who benefit from a more personalised approach to their education.
Our Approach:
Cherry Class offers a balanced curriculum in the mornings, focusing on core subjects such as English and Maths. Alongside academic learning, we emphasise the importance of emotional wellbeing through tailored activities that help children manage and understand their emotions. We understand that some children require extra support to start their day off, for which we offer soft-starts, focusing on positive interactions prior to core learning taking place.
In the afternoons, we support the children to develop interpersonal relationships as well as build self-esteem and communication skills through collaborative tasks, reciprocal shared activities, creativity and STEM activities.
- Mindfulness Practices
We integrate mindfulness into our daily routines, teaching children techniques to calm their minds, focus on the present, and reduce stress.
- Sensory Circuits
Our sensory circuits provide physical, mental and calming activities that help children develop their sensory processing skills, which can improve focus and readiness for learning.
-Zones of Regulation
We use the Zones of Regulation framework to help children identify their feelings and choose strategies to manage their emotions. By recognising how they feel and learning how to respond, children become better equipped to engage with their learning and collaborate with their peers.
Cherry Class is a supportive, small-group environment where children receive the individualised attention they need to thrive, both academically and emotionally. Our goal is to empower each child with the skills and strategies to manage their emotions, enabling them to succeed in their educational journey.
