Art and Design

Intent

It is our intent at Diss Church Junior Academy to provide pupils with a high-quality Art curriculum, which develops creativity, sets challenges, engages and inspires children and equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

We see Art as a vehicle for creativity and individual expression. It is important to the development of pupils’ well-being, appreciation of the world and understanding and empathy of others. We aim to give all children the confidence to express themselves through a range of chosen mediums.

To support the teaching of this we use a cyclical curriculum where children are taught skills and knowledge in the following areas: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Collage, Textiles and 3D and pupils are encouraged to experiment with a range of different materials and techniques to bring their ideas to life. Opportunities to practise Art and Design techniques when using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space are embedded across the Art curriculum through the use of individual sketchbooks. The skills and knowledge taught in each Year Group from Year 1 to 6 are built on each year and children are taught a range of vocabulary linked to each of the areas, building on the vocabulary which has already been introduced the previous year.

We want Art to prepare our children, to give them the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they need to be successful in Key Stage 3 and in later life.

Spirituality:

Imagination, expression and insight expressed through our innermost thoughts and feelings are encouraged in our Art curriculum. Creative work is an important tool for exploring areas of spiritual development such as awe, wonder and pleasure when looking  at and talking about works of Art.
